Gotta teach these durn kids everything...
As I fired up TF2 yesterday, my son, who occasionally plays on my account, came over to me all excited and informed me he had gotten me the Flare Gun.

He was somewhat taken aback when I pinned him with the stink eye and said "You did what?"

And he gamely went on, telling me "Yeah, Tyler and I found these servers where you can get achievements..." and trailed off as I fixed him with a second stink eye.

I explained to him that A) It's my game, not his and if I want achievements unlocked I'll do it myself and B) achievement farming is verboten in my household.

I felt pretty bad about it this morning, though, because I know he meant well and was sorry that he did it once I explained things to him. Fortunately he was up before I left for work this morning, so I let him know I knew he meant well, just that he had to understand I liked to unlock the achievements in the course of playing and that farming is for lamers. Getting together with a couple of buddies to do the really tough ones at the end is OK, but farming is icky.

He bounced back OK, though, when I told him that when the Sniper and Engineer achievements come out, they're all his. He just better not try that stuff with the Heavy or the Soldier, or he's grounded. :-p

I am excited for the sniper and engi achievements, because those are my main classes, but I'm fearful as well.

God knows how many turtled sniper battles we're going to see.

Dude, that's... really not cool. Not cool at all. :( If you don't want the kid getting achievements on your account, get him his own or don't let him play or something.

I'm trying to figure out what's not cool here. He just needed to be straightened out about farming is all; again, I know he meant well, and I honestly don't mind if he plays when I'm not around. I'm not about to re-buy the game so he has his own account, so it's fine, overall. Pyro is really the only class where we overlap.

Stressing to your son that it is important to actually work for the things you achieve in life instead of taking the easy route seems like a fine lesson to me.

I get not being cool with "farming." I guess that means going to a server that lets you cheat. And yeah, cheating is not cool.

What I don't get is you telling him you don't want anything unlocked except by yourself, even if he did it the hard way.

If achievements mean that much to you, maybe you should have told him beforehand to stay off the characters you want.

"If achievements mean that much to you, maybe you should have told him beforehand to stay off the characters you want."

They don't mean that much to me. It's that he did it without asking, setting aside his methods for doing so. My son's a fine kid, but he's got as bad a case of not-thinking-ahead as I've ever seen. Sure, young boys all share that disease, but I'd like to help him cure it sooner rather than later.

FWIW, I may have presented my desire to do the unlocking/achievement thing myself more strongly in print than it came out in real life - or for that matter how I really fell about it. I don't really mind if he does something cool and has fun with it and cracks an achievement here or there, particularly with classes I don't use that much, and I probably didn't explain myself well.

HEY.

Hey.

There's a line, and talking like that about a friend's children is way beyond it.

Hey at least I wasn't tossing out FO style advice, which would probably be along the lines of "BEAT YOUR CHILD AND THEN STRING HIM UP BY THE TENDONS IT WORKED FOR ME AND I CAME OUT OKAY!"

I've had that talk with Briana once or twice, but fortunately it wasn't on a game that was shared in the same fasion. We had separate save files, so I could still unlock things separately; but some of the times it wasn't worth it. ;)

I love how parenting evolves with the times.

Farming is forbidden in this household young man, you get your achievements by achieving them mister.

BUT DAD, BRADLEY UNLOCKED HIS ACHIEVEMENTS BY

I don't care what your schmuck friend Bradley does, my house my rules.
